California Spiny Lobster Season Opens Amidst Record-Breaking Warm Weather
The California spiny lobster season kicked off Saturday amid some of the warmest weather on record.
The opening of the season was pushed up a week from its original launch date due to the unseasonably high temperatures, which have reached up to 95 degrees in parts of Southern California this month.
While the early start may be welcome news to some, it could pose a challenge for commercial fishers who are already struggling to stay afloat as a result of the ongoing drought.
"It's been kind of tough lately because we can't get out on the water as much because it's so choppy," said Jay Freeman, a commercial lobster fisherman based in Santa Barbara. "But I think this beautiful weather is going to help us out. The lobsters are coming out shallow and the crabs are moving around more, so it's definitely good for us."
Freeman said he expects this year's catch to be better than average, thanks in part to the milder temperatures. And despite concerns about the impact of climate change on local fisheries, he remains optimistic about the future.
"It hasn't been easy these past few years but I think things will get better," Freeman said. "We've just got to ride this wave and do what we can."
